Zenwalk Live 5.2 Live CD is Available Now

Zenwalk 5.2 Live CD, based on Zenwalk current and a slightly modified version 6.2.3 of the Linux Live Scripts, Zenwalk Live is meant to be an almost perfect clone of Zenwalk standard, although it now uses a slightly modified kernel in order to unlock specific Live CD features such as, for example, the re-mastering of Zenwalk Live on a USB key with persistent changes.

As always, Zenwalk live features several specific Live CD GUI tools which you will find in Zenpanel (Zenwalk's system configuration panel)... Zen Installer will enable you to install Zenwalk standard on your machine while Live Clone, a WYSIWYG Live CD re-mastering utility, will enable you to generate your very own customized Live CD that will carry any of the changes you may have applied to your Live CD session, whether these changes were simply cosmetic, like a change of wall paper or panel widgets or whether they were more involved like the suppression or addition of different programs, users, etc..

Essential recovery & system tools such as LiloFix, Gparted & Testdisk have not been forgotten & are also available... just in case!

Evidently, Zenwalk Live 5.2 includes all the latest improvements from Zenwalk 5.2 recent release: the suspend and resume refined functions, the new support for blue-tooth input device, the refreshed artwork for the booting menu, boot splash & Xfce environment, as well as the nearly 500 changes to software packages, including Linux kernel 2.6.25.4, Xfce Desktop 4.4.2, Netpkg "new generation" version 4, Xorg version 7.3, Mplayer coupled with the latest dvdnav (DVD menus support), etc..

Zenwalk Live 5.0 Has Been Released

Finally, Zenwalk Live 5.0 is available now! The new Zenwalk Live features all the latest secure & stable versions of Zenwalk 5.0 standard packages based on the current repository.

In this release, the development team also present Zen Installer which will enable you to install a standard Zenwalk system onto your computer's hard drive. You will, of course, find Zen Installer along with all other native Zenwalk system configuration tools under Menu -> System -> Zenpanel (Root password is: ZenLive).

Now, if you first use Live Clone to remaster your own LiveCD & then execute Zen Installer from that remastered LiveCD, it is interesting to note that in that case, you will install your own customized version of Zenwalk rather than the Standard version. This is very helpful if you need to deploy a highly personalized Zenwalk System on the computer park of a school, a cybercafé, an office or an organization.

(Notes: From a Zenwalk Live cession, yous simply have to personalize your desktop graphic environment as well as suppress and/or add some new programs, and then click a couple times in Live Clone, in order to create a LiveCD that will be a perfect clone of your modified cession.)

As previous release, Zenwalk Live 5.0 offers extended multilingual, Multimedia & Wifi support. Simply execute Wicd network manager from Menu -> Network, in order to configure eventual passwords & connect yourself to any available wavelan.

Whats New in Zenwalk 5.0

The Zenwalk GNU/Linux OS continues to provide bleeding edge system focusing on optimal performance and ease of use. This latest release now features the 2.6.23.12 Linux kernel, includes modern hardware detection based on HAL, and continues it's tradition of showcasing the powerful XFCE 4.4.2 desktop.

Being a major release, Zenwalk 5.0 introduces several new systems. Firstly, version 5.0 is the first Zenwalk release to introduce the Freedesktop HAL system (Hardware Abstraction Layer). In the past Zenwalk had provided its own hardware hotplug system, but HAL has now been deemed mature enough to fit within Zenwalk's stability guidelines while giving unbelievable flexibility to hotplug and hardware detection in general.

One of the first things you will notice is that icons representing any plugged or removable media and devices will appear on the desktop with a name matching the device or media type. You will also notice the LSHW (Hardware Lister) which provides detailed information on the hardware configuration of the machine. LSHW can also report exact memory configuration, firmware version, mainboard configuration, CPU version and speed, cache configuration, bus speed, etc...

To top it all off, all HAL-aware applications, such as Thunar (the XFCE file manager) have been configured to provide new features including custom actions, in example when a camera is wired, and many more.

"Zenwalk and it's community provide the best of GNU/Linux software, beautiful artwork, endless system possibilities and support. In short, you need look no further, Zenwalk 5.0 is here", said the development team.

ZenWalk 5.0 RC 1

This release is continuing from previous beta release of ZenWalk 5.0. Main differences between BETA and RC1 are: The theme was changed back to blue/orange, as many users asked to keep the legendary "summer/beach" Zenwalk artwork spirit. Brasero has been integrated into Thunar and the volume manager, so that it is launched in the correct mode (data/audio) when a blank media is inserted. And Most bugs are fixed, course.

For who don't know, Zenwalk Linux (formerly Minislack) is a Slackware-based GNU/Linux operating system with a goal of being slim and fast by using only one application per task and with focus on graphical desktop and multimedia usage.

Zenwalk features the latest Linux technology along with a complete programming environment and libraries to provide an ideal platform for application programmers. Zenwalk's modular approach also provides a simple way to convert Zenwalk Linux into a finely-tuned modern server (e.g. LAMP, messaging, file sharing).

Zenwalk 5.0 First Beta Release

Zenwalk 5.0 will be a major release, introducing several new systems.

Noticeable enhancements to Zenwalk found in version 5.0 are the numerous software updates including the latest Xorg 7.3 suite of X servers, drivers, fonts and other software packaged in a modular and easily manageable fashion. Other updates include the latest version of the Iceweasel web browser, the Icedove email client and hundreds more!

The modern and powerful Wicd wifi-browser and configure application replaces Wifi-radar, while the Intel' (TM) wireless device firmware is provided out of the box and is installed providing the user reads and accepts the Intel license, prompted at the end on the Zenwalk install process. This new licensing acceptance scheme allows users dependent on Non-FOSS drivers and firmware to fully support their hardware without need of searching as well as identifying Non-FOSS software for purists so that they may keep their system inline with their principles.

Following tradition Zenwalk's default desktop environment is XFCE and is now at version 4.4.2 sporting the legendary Zenwalk desktop layout with a completely new artwork design making Zenwalk 5.0 visually and functionally the most sober and elegant release to date.

The Faster Linux has come: ZenWalk 4.8

After several release-candidates, it seems that the new one is ready for a very stable release.

Overall, testers have found Zenwalk 4.8 the fastest version ever.

Kernel is now at 2.6.22.9, with its new wireless stack, tickless clock and 1000 Hz scheduler for better reactivity while lowering power consumption (ideal for laptops).

Talking about applications, the very visible change in 4.8 is the substitute of firefox and Thunderbird into the equivalent GNU Licence versions, named IceWeasel and IceDove.

Zenwalk is setup with Firefox and Thunderbird support so that all softwares work with IceWeasel and IceDove.
Video/Xorg auto-configuration has been improved to handle widescreen monitors as well as to provide full features for Synaptics touchpads.

The fine-tuning of the user interface continues with new desktop artwork, new bootsplash. Zenwalk 4.8 introduces GMusicBrowser, an application that can do everything you can dream of to categorize your music collection, edit tags, normalize filenames, and browse thousands of music files very easily.

Audacious has been removed (now available in the "Extra" repository), all functionality is now handled by other pieces of software, including GMusicBrowser (the jukebox), Streamtuner (the stream browser) and G-Mplayer (the multimedia player) , each taking care of their own specialty.

Thanks to Zenwalk great community packagers, Zenwalk now boasts 1000 of recent packages in the "extra" repository, including OpenOffice 2.3.0, KDE 3.5.7, Gnome 2.18.3 and many other new packages as well as numerous language packs.
