Slax 6.0.3 Has Been Released

The Slax development team has announced the latest version of Slax 6.0.3 yesterday. Among all the updates described in the changelog, it features a bugfix for SquashfsLZMA kernel driver. They said 6.0.3 won’t include the fix, but it has been decided to wait a bit and include it.

What’s new in this release?

  • Added kernel 2.6.24.3 with kernel headers, stripped sources and modules all using the same version, to prevent any possible mismatch
  • Silenced several bootup messages
  • Added wpa_suplicant package
  • Updated to Slackware-current, which adds a lot of FIRMWAREs
  • Fixed a bug in sqlzma, which may cause (in rare conditions) data read errors
  • The sgnfile= boot parameter was not working, so it’s fixed now.
  • Make_iso.sh now works even if called from a different directory
  • The ‘copy to ram’ boot menu option doesn’t have any changes= default anymore
  • Fixed loading of modules from subdirectories while using copy2ram
  • The ‘nocd’ boot parameter has different meaning now. It will cause CDROMs to be skipped, but still visible later on

Slax 6.0 has been Released

Slax, a modern, small and fast Linux operating system with a modular approach and outstanding design, has been released its version 6.0.

What’s new on this release? First, Slax is officially released in two forms, ISO and TAR. As you surely know, the iso format (labeled as “Slax for CD”) is to be burnt to a CD (preferably a miniCD medium). But nowadays, CDs are pretty obsolete, so the TAR format (labeled as “Slax for USB”) is for all the other people who need to run Slax directly from USB media or from a disk. Simply unzip (extract) the tar archive directly to your device (to it’s root directory, it will create ‘boot’ and ’slax’ subdirectories). That’s almost all; you only need to make it bootable. For that purpose, navigate to the ‘boot’ directory and find bootinst.sh (if you are in Linux) or bootinst.bat (if you are in Windows). Run it. Linux users will need to use root account for that. The script will setup the device to be bootable.

If you are using “Slax for USB”, you will notice that all the changes you made are PERMANENT. Yes, even if you’re running Slax from a VFAT filesystem (thanks to posixovl). But a native Linux filesystem is always prefered, of course. In that case, you won’t be able to use bootinst.sh/bat, you’ll have to try liloinst.sh

Despite its small size, Slax provides a wide collection of pre-installed software for daily use, including a well organized graphical user interface and useful recovery tools for system administrators.

The modular approach gives you the ability to include any other software in Slax easily. If you're missing your favourite text editor, networking tool or game, simply download a module with the software and copy it to Slax, no need to install, no need to configure.

NimbleX 2008 Beta has been released

NimbleX; a Slackware-based mini live CD which is able to boot from a mini CD, USB storage device or from another computer on the Local Area Network; has released the 2008 Beta version. Several things still need to be polished but overall it's an important step towards what's going to be NimbleX 2008. The most significant changes are from the technology point of view, that in the future should provide a significant increase in usability and stability.

Highlights since NimbleX 2007 are:

  • Experimental Safe Installer
  • Better LZM compression
  • 2008 Beta is split in 5 pices
  • 9 Desktop environments
  • and many other things.

The Experimental Safe Installer is a very important addition for the users that was created to allow people with XP, and in the future with other distros, to make a "one key hit" safe deployment to HDD. The approach with the experimental safe installer is to avoid altering any partitions, this way minimizing the risk of damaging data and minimizing the user input to only one Enter necessary to get NimbleX on the HDD.
Using the new LZM compression I managed to squeeze a lot more stuff in NimbleX.

This beta is 16MB overweight and in the final we'll have to loose some weight to keep in the 200MB shape. NimbleX 2008 Beta is split in 5 to allow users that customize it a greater flexibility. Those that don't need a graphical environment can easily make it 50MB big.

9 Desktop environments have been added in the Beta: KDE, E17, E16, XFCE, IceWM, EDE, Fluxbox, OpenBox and TWM.

Other significant additions are: Gimp, XINE, Firefox, XMMS, GParted, ClamAV, support for RPM and DEB packages and many many other stuff. The beta has many multimedia libs added by default, but they and other stuff will probably be removed in final to slim it down to 200MB.

The KOffice package now contains all the applications but it's usability it's still the usability that KOffice always offered.
To remaster the NimbleX CD, all you have to do now is execute the remaster script from a terminal.

Vector Linux Standart 5.9 RC 1 has released

The Vector Linux founder, Robert Lange has announced the first release candidate of VectorLinux 5.9.

Vector Linux is a small, fast, Intel based Linux operating system for PC style computers. The creators of Vector Linux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be.

What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere. For the casual computer user you have a lightening fast desktop with graphical programs to handle your daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on ICQ or IRC to running an ftp server.

The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile their own programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for their home or office computer network. Administrators will be equally as pleased because the small size and memory requirements of the operating system can be deployed on older machines maybe long forgotten.

As said in its release notes of Vector Linux 5.9:

"We are proud to release the RC1 of VectorLinux 5.9 standard. We should not be to far away from a final at this point. We want to be looking at the overall usability of this release and where we can make improvements in the user experience. This includes squashing remaining bugs and improving the package mix. With this release we updated Firefox, SeaMonkey, Opera and the GIMP to their latest. We improved on the artwork (subject to discussion) and added a few software selections to balance the usability. We did some major code clean-ups to the init system and udev for faster boot-up and shut-down speeds. The development team is very pleased with this release we think you will be too."

Absolute Linux 12.1.0 Beta 1 Has Released

First beta of Absolute Linux 12.1.0 that based on the recently updated Slackware 12.0 modification has released.
This is a beta release because it is based on Slackware-current. The base system, utilities and integration are actually superior to anything in the 12.x series so far, but it is possible that there can be package incompatabilities between Slackware 12.0 releases and Absolute 12.1x.

Includes support back to Intel Pentium CPUs; this means you should be able to install on an old Intel Pentium-1 or a AMD K6-2 machine. You will need at least 48MB of RAM. Suggested minimum hardware requirements are a Intel Pentium II and 64MB RAM. If things run slow, turn off the auto-mounting option.

The default Auto-mouting of connected devices (CDs, USB sticks, external drives...) is unique in that devices are not automatically mounted, but icons of the devices appear in a panel hidden UNDER the taskbar. When you want to look, click the arrow on the right of the taskbar; that bar will slide off to the right, and connected devices appear on the lower panel.

Single-click on an icon for the default action, else right-click for a menu. (For example, an audio CD will have "Play", "Rip" and "eject" listed.) You can also have the devices truly auto-mounted, with icons popping up on the desktop, by selecting the appropriate options in the DevTray preferences. For VOLUMES > PREFERENCES, choose MOUNTING auto mount and under pinboard show icons on the pinboard.

You can download it at here.

Being an Open Source project without corporate background and without funding, the BlackRoute Linux project is always looking for new contributors to help with development, web design, translations, support, spreading the word, and more.

Lapwing Linux, a mini Slackware

Lapwing Linux is Slackware based "lite" desktop distribution. Lapwing-Linux is a distro thats not full of bloat and fat but includes all the software needed to be useful.

Lapwing don't restrict the user to having just what we give them, it make it easy to add, remove and rip to shreds everything if the user wants to.

Highlights of Lapwing are:

  • Easy to learn; for all computer users, from expert Windows users to computer newbies
  • Easy to administer; it shouldn't be a chore to get new software or configure it
  • Easy to tinker; understandable options and scripts, let the user decide how things work
  • Easy to recover; in case the user does foul it up, easy to get something working again
  • Easy to blow up; just kidding :-)
The different Lapwing-Linux from all the other GNU/Linux distros as author said are:
It doesn't use the current development model of "freezing" packages for a release; the core packages (such as glibc, GCC, UDEV etc) are frozen to ensure stability, but all packages "above" this are renewed as and when needed.
You can download Lapwing at here.
